Most people have this certain belief that to have a good career you must have a university, polytechnic or college degree. Although this may be true as most high-paying careers like engineering, medicine, law and the likes require a certificate from a certified educational institution before getting started but that doesn’t mean that there are no good or high-paying career paths for dropouts or people with no certificates.
Being a dropout doesn’t stop you from having a successful career as many dropouts today are millionaires and billionaires. Billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg founder of Facebook (Meta) and Rasaq Okoya founder of Eleganza Group dropped out and didn’t complete university education and are successful in their chosen careers.
This brings us to the question:
What would be a good career for a dropout?
Essentially, anyone hoping to have a good career must have a certain level of literacy i.e he/she must be able to read, write and effectively communicate his/her ideas to other people. Here are some good career paths for dropouts:
1. Programming, Web and App Development
Programming languages like Bootstrap, jQuery, Angular, Code Igniter, PHP/JavaScript and MySQL as well as web and app development require no certificate for one to learn. These skills can be learnt from online sources like YouTube and one can easily start a career with this after learning these skills to an extent. These skills are listed on a regular basis in the top 10 most in-demand by employers on LinkedIn.
2. Graphic, Websites and App Design
Just like the first, it requires no certificate to get started and a dropout can make a good career out of this. Learning and mastering these skills might take a while but it’s definitely a good career path for people with no certificate. You don’t have to be a master of the skill before you start earning, It mostly depends on how fast, creative and research full the person is.
3. Digital and Social Media Marketing
Digital marketing skills like Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Pay-per-Click (PPC) Advertising, Social Media Marketing, Content Marketing, Email Marketing and so on can also be learnt online and used to make money. The good thing about these skills is that they are mostly remote i.e you can do these from anywhere you are as long as you know the skill.
Aside from the above-mentioned 3, careers like; Plumbing, Auto mechanics, photography and entrepreneurship are also good career paths. This may require more physical strength and presence but at the end of the day, it brings in money.
Learning any of the above-mentioned skills and starting your desired career isn’t a guarantee that you’ll eventually be a millionaire or billionaire. It’s not easy to start a good career from scratch but with adequate planning, hard work, consistency and the ability to adapt to new trends you can have a good career that will turn in lots of money.
